We welcome diverse members from all walks of life by offering three distinct membership paths: Active Firefighter, Junior Firefighter, and Associate Member. Each role is crucial and contributes significantly to our mission.

Active Firefighters are the backbone of our operations. If you're 18 or older, you can embark on this fulfilling journey. Applicants need to pass a physical exam and background check, and complete the comprehensive 79-hour Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations course provided by New York State. Please note, you should live or work within the Cold Spring Fire Protection District to apply.

For young enthusiasts aged 16 to 18, our Junior Firefighter program is a fantastic way to start. With a parent or guardian's consent, you can become an active part of our team. This program requires passing a physical exam and adheres to certain restrictions to ensure safety and proper guidance.

Associate Members play a vital supporting role, offering administrative or other general assistance. This role is perfect for those who wish to contribute without physical demands. You can participate in various ways, such as serving on a committee, helping with the junior fire academy, or supporting daily operations at the firehouse.

WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER?

To be a volunteer firefighter, you must be an adult who is physically able to perform the duties of a firefighter. Cold Spring Fire has two types of active firefighters: exterior and interior. Exterior firefighters have fewer training requirements and perform duties restricted to the exterior of a structure or the perimeter of a technical rescue. While exterior firefighters must complete New York State’s Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations course, interior firefighters must also complete New York State’s Interior Firefighting Operations course and have additional responsibilities, including entering structures, operating while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus, and performing technical rescue operations.

IS THERE A MAXIMUM AGE TO JOIN COLD SPRING FIRE?

No, there is no maximum age to join Cold Spring Fire. If you can meet the physical requirements for the role you are applying for, your application will be considered. If you do not meet the requirements to be an interior firefighter, you may meet the criteria to serve as an exterior firefighter, a driver, or a fire police member. Associate members, of course, have no physical requirements to serve.

I HAVE NO PRIOR FIREFIGHTING EXPERIENCE – CAN I STILL JOIN?

YES! Most of our volunteer firefighters come to the fire service without prior firefighting experience.

FIREFIGHTING CAN BE DANGEROUS – WHAT DOES COLD SPRING FIRE DO TO PROTECT ME WHILE I AM RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES?

We provide you with all the emergency personal protective equipment (PPE) you need to be kept safe while responding to emergency calls in our community – and all at no cost to you! We also provide volunteer firefighters with a program of insurance coverage similar to workers’ compensation for medical treatment of fire company duty-related injuries and illness with no out-of-pocket cost to the injured or ill firefighter.
